I came across an interesting article which mentions that moderate alcohol seems to actually be good for kidney transplant recipients. It mentions that moderate drinkers were less likely to get diabetes, which is a very definite threat given our drugs (prograf and prednisone), and more important less likely to die (the article didn't mention specifics) http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/11/101121122547.htm

I saw that too. I imagine it depends on every person's specific health issues. In a study of the general population it was suggested that those who drink moderately (one drink a day for women, up to 2 for men) should continue to do so, but those who do not drink at all should not start. Studies also show that you only benefit if you drink small amounts frequently, not if you binge or drink more than the recommended amount. So I guess each person has to be honest about their propensity to overindulge. And if you know you're going to exceed the recommended amount on a regular basis, it's best not to do it at all. By the way, my center (and doctor) are okay with moderate drinking for most patients. I think it depends on the center, the meds you are on and if you have co-morbid issues. |

I was just told that I could have a couple of beers if I wanted to, every now and then.

I have always been told that for me a kidney transplant that there is no problem in drinking alcohol as long as you stick within national guidlines ie 2-3 pints 2-3 times a week maximum. |

While not a kidney transplant I would point out that your Rx bottles have warnings stickers about taking them with Alcohol.

I have a drink once in a while, have ever since the transplant. I like red wine. No one ever told me not to have a drink, and I like wine and I think a glass is good for you once in a while. Yes I agree Jack not to drink and then down your pills but wine at dinner once in a while for me has been fine. Everyone is different.

Like everything else about transplantation, drinking is all about common sense. I only drink a few times a year when celebrating something like my bro's b-day. I let myself go knowing that having a few beers or pina coladas once in a while will not hurt my liver and I haven't noticed any problems with my meds.

I just came across this study. I see it as hugely important. Given that Tacrolimus induces diabetes in up to 50% of patients, and that moderate alcohol consumption reduces the risk of diabetes post-transplant signifcantly, I'm definitely having a beer when I watch the game, once I get a transplant.
