I have been on 10mg of Prednisone for about 10 years and doctor will not reduce it as only other anti-rejection drug i am on is 2g of Cellcept (was lowered from 3 g a day 2 months ago due to CMV Ulcers in gut) I have just noticed that maybe 40 minutes after i take my dose i get a fluttering feeling in chest and get all tense and nervous, a bit jacked and sometimes get really hot if walking - This in turn would make me even more tired afterwards for a few hours than i usually am.. I don’t know if i never really noticed it before as i was going to the Gym before work and it masked the effects.. In any case i was going to ask my doctor next time i see him if i can take the dose at night but i have never read of anyone taking Prednisone at night - just wondered if anyone here does take Prednisone at night or if it’s just a drug you have to take in the morning.

I take mine in the morning, so I guess I am no help. I am only taking 2.5 mg, so I am sure it probably has less impact. Good luck in finding an answer to your question. Have you told your doctor about this feeling and asked him about it? That might provide an explanation to your question. What causes it, doc?

I wonder if your doc would consider switching you from pred to tacro?

I don't think it is a replacement, but I could be wrong.

hi Carl. I am only 6 weeks post tx now (dual kidney and pancreas tx), but having lots of issues with prednisone and prograf causing my sugar levels to stay above normal range.
My doc explained that prednisone builds up a bit of a reserve in your system if you take it regularly.
So I requested taking my Pred in 5mg doses spread out through the day and it helped my symptoms be much more manageable. (also taking it with food)

I have been taking 5mg with breakfast and 5mg with lunch and anther 5 with supper. Haven't had any insomnia issues and my sugar doesn't spike in the afternoon like it did when I was taking 15mg with breakfast.

Be sure to discuss with your doc though before implementing any changes

For about 25 years I was taking prednisone 7.5mg once a day at night, my TX center told me at if it up set my stomach to take it with food. a month or two ago I found out that it could cause sleep problems(was never told this when I started prednisone). I have had sleep problems for over 35 years.
After I switched to taking the prednisone in the morning with all my other am meds I'm sleeping better some night I don't even need sleep meds

I had a kidney transplant on Aug 23rd of this year at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. They gave me Prednisone while I was in the hospital but discontinued it when I was released. Apparently they are on the cutting edge of research regarding not keeping their patients on prednisone, which I am very glad of, as I gained 25 pounds while in the hospital, but am glad to say that I lost it all in two weeks, and am now losing the extra weight I had put on from the PD dialysis. I do take Prograf, which was greatly reduced in the last few weeks, and Myfortic, which I have had to work with as it gave me diarrhea for a period. I think I am really starting to feel like a human again. I wonder what other centers discontinue the prednisone?

Alaskagal, more and more centers are doing steroid avoidance. I have been pred-free since 2002 and I had my transplant at the U of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Maybe one day, I will be off of it, but when we asked the transplant doctors about it, they said that they were worried about the future--said that although there were prednisone free programs, that they were not convinced that it might cause a problem in the future. Hell, I only take 2.5 mg/day now.

Gregg, I decided to take the risk as I already had significant bone problems and knew I would probably not do well on the pred. So I traded an immediate concern (fractures) for a potential long term concern (perhaps slight earlier organ rejection). It's worked for me well so far as I've never had an episode of rejection (knock on wood).

I have osteopenia in my spine and a stretch mark between my chest and tummy and fatty deposits under eyes/dark circles around eyes from the prednisolone
I was only taking 10mg alternate days when I stopped taking it in 2008 and I didn't tell any doctors about it for five months because I knew they'd scare me into going back on it and give me a lecture about possible rejection which they did anyway
I didn't reject and I knew I wouldn't since I was taking a small dose however stopping a higher dose suddenly could be dangerous because of adrenal crisis

Thank you for all the replies - I have been away for a week on holidays at my brother-in-laws farm - I noticed the side effects of the Prednisone subsided while away - as i was too busy cutting down trees for firewood, feeding animals, mowing lawns, bushwalking, playing with my daughter etc to think much about it- i think because i usually sit at a desk 8 hours a day normally i get more tired and have more opportunities to focus on every little twinge. I will keep taking the Prednisone in the morning and try to hit the gym again as I think in my case 40% of my fatigue is in my own head – I was really happy how active I could be but still got really tired and had to have afternoon naps but felt 100% better not at work and doing physical work during the day instead of sitting on my

Carl, there is no doubt that one of the worst things that humans can do is to just sit. It causes so many problems, sciatica amongst them. Good luck!!
