is iron safe to take? as in in the form of iron tablets...my rbc are lo and my hb is falling also my hematocrit is low. Hemoglobin 12.8 low for me normally 148 rbc 3.76 mcv 102 mch 34 |

Because I have always had anemia problems even post tx,, I have always taken iron. I take a supplement called Polyride Fe. It is designed for low iron based on renal issues. I'm not sure of the exact formulation, but it seems to help. I would talk to the doc before adding any supplements though. Just in case. Cora

Iron is safe to take for us transplants. Ferrous sulfate is usually at around 325mg per tablet or its equivalent. But like Cora said, you'll want to check with your doc first because the iron may or may not be what you need. It may just be folic acid or vitamin Bs, side effect of a drug you are taking or something else, like gastrointestinal or some other form of internal bleeding. The caution with iron is that you'll want to check how much is left in your body, using the ferritin test, because having very high levels of iron in your body for prolonged periods harms our organs.
