Can anyone answer this question? I have a one year old nephew who will be having a kidney transplant in Chicago within the year. I am most likely his best match. If everything else lines up, can they take my kidney from here, Alabama, and send it to Chicago, or will I have to be in Chicago for this surgery? Thanks. |

Well, I had a transplant in Seattle from a donor in Indiana, and she had to fly to Seattle. I suppose it's possible, as they ship cadaver organs, but the thing is, it's much better to have a live body, where they take the kidney out of the one, and put it right into the other. Sounds like a lot of questions that the transplant center in the area where your nephew will be, could answer a lot of questions. To start with, whether you are a match.

My transplant was at Stanford and my donor from Seattle. The social worker found free flights( vouchers) and a free hotel stay for a week for both the donor and his wife. Additionally my insurance company had a fund that was offered via an American Express card for additional costs, food, car, etc so my donor was not out a penny. His wife was able to be with him the whole time. Most centers will go out f their way to help! |
