There is no certainty how long a kidney can last but still...How long can an unrelated 65 year old kidney last in a young patient? The donor does not have hypertension or diabetes. I know 'Gene' received a kidney from a 64 year old donor. Anyone had any experience and how long it lasted? |

Hi Sumi, You are correct, there is no certainty how long a Tx kidney will last. I guess that would also mean there is no expiration date for one either. From personal experience, 13 yrs. was mine for my first cadaver first Tx kidney. I know of a member here, who has recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. As for quality of life, having a Tx was decidedly better than dialysis for me. With today's advanced knowledge, techniques, and medications, longevity has greatly increased regardless of donor age. |

I would think they would not give it to you if doctors felt it would last for a good amount of time.
