Bit of a veteran (14yr k/p transplant) and have had to miss my medications several times - the longest was 3 days worth. I've asked my doctor to tell me what the percentage match was between myself and my donor but he just dodges answering me "oh goodness that's buried in the records somewhere" etc. While I was on dialysis, several patients had said they only missed one dose and they lost the transplant. Does this mean I'm probably a close match? Is there a data base that I can access to find out how close a match my donor (cadaver) and I were?} |

This is personal opinion only, based on what I know of my transplant and those of a few friends (as well as my biology degree). There is no direct correlation between match and rejection. Not any more and not with modern transplant meds. Take me for example. My cousin and I were a 1/6 match. I've had my gift almost 12 years now and over a few years I had tremendous gastric issues and vomited a lot (sometimes for months on end). I can't imagine how inconsistent my drug absorption was. And (knock on wood) I've never had an episode of rejection. Rejection isn't anywhere near as simple as drug level/consistency versus degree of matching. For example, you may come in contact with something (blood transfusion, infection, virus) that can cause your immune system to react. Will it react, once on high alert, to your kidney? The answer is that they just don't know exactly what triggers a rejection. And then there is acute rejection versus chronic rejection. Again, 2 different things. The best you can do is improve your odds by taking your drugs as regularly as you can and to try to avoid getting sick. The rest is up to God (if you are a believer) and nature. And neither is truly understood.

Cora, Very well put! I agree, I have missed doses many times before, even called the nurse to tell her. They were not concerned
