Hi, it has been a long while since i last posted here. Hope everyone's fine (: I had a kidney transplant for 3+ years and blood tests have shown to be stable and healthy (: I have just graduated and looking for my very first full time job. interview scheduled next week. I had to fill in a registration form which asks about my medical history. I ticked yes and mentioned that I need to be on medication. So if the interviewers (most likely HR only) were to ask me about this during the interview, should I be 100% honest about it? ( personally feel more comfortable to let my immediate boss know, only if I get the position) and if they do not mention about it, should I declare? and i'll most likely need to do a basic blood test + urine test. so if i were to keep this from HR, will the test results show? I've been thinking about this for days and really hope to get suggestions in this forum. It's all the more perplexing for me because I already know most of the people there during my internship.. I don't want to be dishonest but I don't want to be discriminated against as well. During my internship I was glad that my efforts were recognized. I don't want to be treated any different from others because of my medical condition. I'm normal!! Would really appreciate suggestions. Thanks guys. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger! |

Hi, Congratulations on your kidney transplant, I also had a kidney transplant on July 5, 2010, my labs our fine & feel great. Regarding telling your employer about your medical history, I would not worry about it. I was in same situation, I was on dialysis for 10 years then received a kidney transplant it had been many years since I had worked, I let my employer know, I have always believed Honesty is best policy, What our they going to do? I am being honest and up front with employer, Honesty is rare anymore in business employers like a employee that is honest. God bless you. |

DO NOT TELL THEM! They won't hire you because they will have visions of their employee health premiums shooting through the roof. I made the BIG mistake of being honest about my medical issues with an employer and they targeted me for layoff. Your health is none of their business and it is illegal for them to ask about it. |

Hi Angelscry, I disagree with Rob C, and feel you should be up front and open with your employer. You do not know what is in your future and God forbid, your need time to deal with a problem, do you really want to tell them then? Your want an employer who is aware of you needs and to be "in your corner" when you need support. No future employer is entitled to your medical information, however trust is a two way street which begins with you. Congratulations on receiving your Tx and I nope you enjoy good health forever. |

I worked for a major corporation for 20 years. Every year of my employment, regardless of the position I held, every appraisal I received stated my work was excellent. One day, I decided to tell my boss about my disease. This was 5 years before dialysis or transplant. Immediately after disclosing this information, I was targeted for layoff. Of course I sued and received a large settlement in addition to being offered my job back. I took the settlement, but not the job. Why would I want to go back to work for such a poor excuse of a company! I learned the hard way...IT IS NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS!

Same here Pam I sued them and got a six figure out of court settlement after they refused to give me my job back. Ever since then it has been a constant battle to keep my Social Security disability benefits because SSI thinks I am able to work but employers disagree. |
