Hi folks, I am going to have a pancreas biopsy next week. My amylase is around 180 and after three doses of IV solumedrol has not changed. Just wondering what to expect. It really sounds rather painful but maybe I am just really nervous about it. I know the pancreas has no sensation but they still have to go through me to get to it! Any thoughts would be appreciated. Mike

Hi Mike, I have had a few kidney biopsies though no pancreas procedures, The "operations" are similar . Basically an ultrasound tech will poke and prod you to locate the pancreas (pressure...no pain.) Your surgeon will insert a long needle and grab a few samples of tissue(again pressure....no pain due to local anesthesia. A pathologist will "read" the samples later to determine if there is any signs of rejection, infection, or scarring. These results take about a day. Twenty-four hours of bed rest and monitoring after watching temp or for pain and bleeding. Aside from all the ultrasound "joy jelly" I wasn't bothered at all. The worry is worse than the event. Good luck! |
