Hi, I am a 72 year old female. My family doctor has not been telling me that my eGFR has been declining over the years. I found out through a temporary doctor I went to when my family doctor was gone on vacation. My labs have always been good or OK. My last lab said that my eGFR is 47, creatinine 1.14, and Glucose 113 (I drank 3 sips of coffee with coffee mate creamer in it before the test). I do not have diabetes. It showed low chloride by one point, CO2 was 28. I am on medications for high blood pressure, my blood pressure has been pretty good but fluctuates. I am on a water pill that I was put on just a few months ago when I got this test done. I have a history of UTI's and kidney infections but not recently. My sodium was a little low also. I do not drink water much, just enough to take my medications. I drink coffee with creamer and sometimes Gatorade, orange juice and started drinking the Naked fruit/vegetable smoothies. I thought maybe the eGFR is low from being dehydrated? I had a dipstick urine test and it was normal with a trace of blood found. I'm getting an ultrasound done this week. I'm just really worried I have kidney disease. I just now found out about this and my doctor never mentioned anything to me about it. He told me to drink more water before though.

Hi Heather, It sounds to me like it would be a good idea to see a nephrologist, and get more of an understanding of what is going on.

One of the things I have found is that medical doctors aren't all that versed on nutrition. Being as I knew I had a hereditary kidney disease, I have always drank a lot of water, not not eat processed foods... and for that matter, I have been mostly vegan in the last 10-15 years, except for when I was on dialysis for half a year. Now I have a transplant, but limit the animal protein I eat to just supplement. But the most important thing, I would say is that you need to get used to a lot of good, clean water to drink. Yes, dehydration could have an effect on your creatinine and also a water pill could leach your minerals. Perhaps a nephrologist could not only find more, but make sure you are taking the correct bp med.

Blessings

Hi Heather, I'm 77 and my transplanted kidneys creatinine is between 1.6 and 2.0 and has been stable at this level for the 3-1/2 years since my transplant. My docs say to drink lots of liquid (which ones are up to you - except no grapefruit juice and not too much alcohol). My favorite drinks are green tea and diet sodas, which some consider a no-no. Your creatinine level is slightly above normal (normal is less than 1.12 at Kaiser) and you will probably not be referred to a nephrologist until it reaches about 1.17 (I was not referred until my level was about 2.3, 12 years before my transplant). My creatinine level exceeded 1.13 when I was in my early 20's. Please don't worry but continue to enjoy life and have periodic tests for your creatinine level (I totally ignore my GFR as the creatinine is a better measure of kidney health). Your kidney will probably support you for many years to come (as I expect mine will also). Good Luck!
