Hi Nickles. It should only take as long as the bloodwork takes..to see if you are a match. Then the rest of the testing is different for everyone. Some have gone through in a few months and then others have had to lose weight before they could donate..or quit smoking, etc. and that depended upon them. What have you had done so far and when>?

Nickles - thank you for stepping forward to be a donor. I hope and pray the process goes smoothly and ends with a favorable outcome. Keep in mind there are many variables and the testing process is very selective and thorough. As Heather noted excessive weight and smoking are two of many reasons why a potential donor can be excluded. Sounds like you're a directed donor (you know the person who could receive your kidney). Depending on their current health condition and how stable/unstable they are, it can move forward very quickly (a few days) - especially the matching part. Once that's done there are other tests/evaluations so be prepared. Even if you are not a match you could become part of a paired donation chain that could save many lives including the person you know so don't despair if you're not a match and are still determined to donate. All that being said - my non-directed donation testing/evaluation took almost a year. But I think that's unusual and most organ transplant clinics do that intentionally to ensure the donor is committed. I know that's different for directed donors (you). Keep us posted on how it goes and I wish you well.
