Hi all, I will be donating my kidney to my brother at the end of the month. I'm curious to know of any women who have had pregnancies after donating their kidney. Were there any complications or issues during your pregnancy or labor? Also, did you have a OB/GYN with a background for treating women who are living kidney donors? My mother had maternal hypertension, and our nephrologist has warned me of that risk. I'm only 22, and I have hopes of becoming a mother in the future. I just hope this donation does not impose on my future plans. Please share, I would love to hear from you. jen |

Good morning Jen, I remember your original post and would ask that you contact the Transplant team and ask them that question and they may also know of a ob/gyn who has handled recipients as there are recipients who have gone through gestation. I truly hope you find your answers and please let us know how the donation goes. Hoping your dreams come true.

Hi Jen. I know of kidney donors having children after donating. I would think that they should be followed by someone who specializes in high risk pregnancies..esp. since you have a history of hypertension in your mother. I do not the ones I am thinking of who have had children are active here anymore. Perhaps you can google pregnancy after living kidney donation. If you decide to google..let us know what you find out. I do not think donating should keep you from having a family!! Just maybe a little higher risk.

Hello Jen, I donated at the age of 26 last year and was also concerned about pregnancies after donation because i have not had a family yet. Being a donor does NOT make your future pregnancies automatically high risk. Coincidentally, about a month after i decided I wanted to donate, the University of Minnesota released the very first long term study of pregnancies after organ donation. I want to say it was around January of 2009; I encourage you to search online for it. The Univ of MN is the leader in kidney donations and research. The university's hospital does the most transplants per year of any other facility in the world! The biggest thing that i remember from reading the study was that women who have complications in pregnancy (that also were previously donors) had the same risk level as a person who did not donate. Complications were probably going to happen anyways for those individuals due to other factors. Of course, everyone is different. YOu may be at risk for certain things simply because of your mother's health history. My doctor said that my kidney donation is the kind of thing you tell your OB/GYN after you find out your pregnant, just so they can keep an eye out. But they test for diabetes and hypertension anyways for every pregnant woman, so it isn't like they have to do extra things for you just because you have one kidney. Please continue to ask specific questions with your transplant team. Ask them what they know about last year's pregnancy study that released. Remember, everyone's bodies are different. Best of luck to you!!!!!!!!!

There are a lot of unknowns in regards to pregnancy post-donation. A few studies have been conducted, however, and their results can be found here: http://www.livingdonor101.com/risks.shtml |

Study from University of Minnesota (facility does the most transplants of any facility in the world, therefore largest sample size and most accurate information available at this time) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2747242/ "In regard to kidney donors, two small series suggested that pregnancy after kidney donation was not associated with an increased risk of adverse fetal or maternal outcomes" Hope you find this helpful for your research! Read as much information as possible so that you are comfortable with your final decision.
