Before you read further, I would like you to do something. I would like you to open a separate tab and punch the words “organ donation” into your favorite search engine. Take a quick look at the top results...then come back to me.
As a willing donor, I have to tell you the exercise I just asked you to perform really frustrated me. Lots of words, nothing at all that really advanced my knowledge or was even too terribly helpful. While this is a fledgling organization, I am not new to this donation thing. I probably know more than most about the process and where to look for information, and even I had trouble finding anything of actual use. I can’t imagine having no idea where to begin and trying to sort it all out from what little does exsist. There is a serious lack of information and follow through and just general donor SUPPORT that isn’t recipient oriented. This makes perfect sense because the donor is not the one who is in crisis. It is however short sighted. There is a void that needs to be filled, and I am going to do everything I can to meet this need.
I hope to make this a haven for all donors. Liver, kidney, blood, bone marrow/tissue, platelets, and lung. It all matters, and it is all so very important. The people who feel the call to give are so very important. People want to donate, some of us NEED to donate or be involved, its time we collected ourselves into a community.
You don’t know me yet, but I assure you, I can lead this movement into the light. I ask each of you to stick with me. I need you. I need your faith, I need your input and experience. The call to service is very real and many of us feel that call, but a call with no answer is a wasted opportunity for all of us. Let us reach out to those who have long ago abandoned the blogs and forums about their donation experience because they felt no one was listening and remind them that they are the soul of what organ donation is and should be. Let us do more than reach out to those who consider donating, lets walk with them. Lets listen to their concerns in a real way and not direct them to “form” pages that have existed forever and have never really said anything. We are not going to “scoff” at ignorance, we will try to alleviate its cause. Potential donors will find in us a patience for ALL questions and come to trust that our answers are honest. We will be compassionate when they confess a fear or concern and we will leave judgement at the door. We will not convince, coerce. or otherwise attempt to influence decisions, instead we will be compassionate providers of all the information one should need to reach their own conclusion. If they should determine it is in them to donate, then we will lend every ounce of support we as a community have. If they should determine that it is not within them to donate, we will respect and show admiration for even the thought and offer every ounce of support that we as a community have.

AMEN. I have been trying to get information and it is very difficult and generic. I have found a few living liver donors who have stepped up to help me provide their experiences, but it would be great if I had more than 3 people helping me along the way. |
