I was curious if any living donors received Short Term Disability while off from work while recovering after surgery? I am having trouble getting an answer of whether or not I will be eligible. My main doubt is because the surgery is voluntary. Would love to hear feedback! Thank you!! |

I got short term disability through my employer. Our agency's policy was one week of short term disability for every year of service plus one week. I had fully completed eight years of service so I got nine weeks at 60% pay which started after three weeks of being off. I banked the three weeks of time off. The FMLA paperwork the center filled out crossed over to cover the short term disability. I don't know if any short term disability is covered through SSI like long term or not. I was able to defer my car payments for four months through my credit union.

Hi Shana, I filed FMLA paperwork which guaranteed my job position and also received short term disability. I purchased a policy about a year ago. There was no question whether or not to cover the time off even though it was an elective procedure. Good luck! The transplant donor team filed all the paper work for me, they are pros at it. |

Hi Shana, just an update, I just received a letter today from another disability insurance policy that my employer offers as part of my contract, they denied the disability claim as they feel that live organ donation is elective surgery! So if I were you I would look into the specifics of the disability policy that you have because I guess they all view this surgery in a different way, one of my policies approved the other didn't. I am appealing the decision by the way and have put calls into the head of my benefits department. The irony is that I am a nurse and work for a large health care company! We are trying to educate people on the importance of organ donation, if it is financially prohibitive than people will not feel they are able to even consider live donation as an option! Insurance or not I would donate again in a heartbeat. Best of luck, keep us in the loop. |

Hopefulgirl, you brought up a great point. If the county didn't have short term I would have been in rough shape financially. It would never have stopped me from donating but I definitely would have needed help from the rest of the family. In many ways I'm still catching up. My time off took the biggest beating a long vacation is definitely out for this summer again. I haven't taken a day off that wasn't directly or indirectly involved with the transplant since December of 2010. I just lost four days over the last two weeks because an internal suture didn't dissolve and they had to go in and take it out. Have you heard of any medical insurance companies giving donors problems with pre-existing conditions if something happens down the road? My coordinator mentioned a foundation or lobby group that would help if it does happen.
