I'm currently being evaluated to become a kidney donor, I go in next week for the full workup. I have read a lot about it and have one question some of you might be able to help with. It sounds like they normally take the left kidney, it has a longer vein and is easier to remove. But, unlike the right side, the vein that drains the adrenal gland on the left side needs to be cut and sealed off. If there are no other veins to drain the adrenal gland this causes it to quit working and may damage the adrenal gland on the right side as well. Is this correct? If so, wouldn't it be better to take the right kidney? Can they tell before hand if you have more than one vein draining the adrenal gland on the left side? I plan to discuss this with anyone who will listen when I go in next week, just wanted to hear from people with first hand experience if possible.

They find all of that out after your workup. When I had mine, they said it is almost always the left, since the right has major veins and it is more invasive to do the right. I am not exactly sure what what they do with the adrenal gland at that point. I was just told taking the right is riskier and more invasive. sorry I am not much help. |

Hello River - my understanding is the surgical team doesn't make this decision until after an MRI of the vein structure of each kidney. Everyone is different but yes, the most common is to take the left kidney.
