I noticed in your post that you and your daughter had your operations at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide. That is where I donated a kidney to my husband 3 years ago now. Where do you live? We are just 20 minutes from the QEH, which is a good thing as my husband got seriously ill 14 months post transplant. All is well now, but he still sees his specialist every 2 months. The team at the QEH are great, but the renal unit is now being moved to the RAH. Same team just different location. Sandy

Hullo Sandra, I live in Mildura but my daughter lives in Adelaide out near Parafield in Davoren Park. That is why the operation was done in Adelaide. My daughter has various problems with the anti rejection drugs but I guess that is the price you pay. I do not seem to have any after effects and am still healthy, the only side effect I have noticed is I can not drink as much beer as I used to. It is great that you were able to donate for your husband, when I first saw your letter I thought you may have been the couple that we ran into several times when attending QEH but I think you would have been before us and this other couple would have been after us. Yes the team were great and Toni East was a wonderful help. Yours etc lopsided |

Nice to hear transplant stories from down under. The young woman caring for my former left kidney is from The Rocks in Sydney - I know, I know, that's a long ways away from Adelaide but it's much closer than Salt Lake City. We've become quite fond of Tim Tams in all their varieties and recently found that a local grocery imports them. My best to the Land of Oz!

Hullo Chad, thanks for your welcome and I hope my message finds you well. So were you from Australia or what was the relationship that brought your wonderful gift about. I have never been to Sydney only ever around the outskirts on the way past to somewhere else. I have family near Newcastle and have found this to be a lovelly area to visit. Tim Tams are great and like most people I find them hard to leave alone, we call them very "moreish" as we always want more. Good Luck to you and yours in Salt Lake City Yours etc Lopsided. |

Lopsided & Sandra - the recipient of my kidney is originally a Kiwi but has lived most of her life in Sydney with the exception of her schooling in the U.S. That's when/where she found out she was in renal failure - so there's the connection to the U.S. Since mine was a non-directed donation she was the next person on the list and living in California at the time. She found out about the match on a Wednesday and by Friday was side-by-side with me in SLC. Just yesterday I stumbled upon the form she signed releasing her name and expressing her desire to meet...we've stayed in touch ever since. Some day I hope to make it to her/your part of the world. I already feel that I'm a part of a family down under. One of our presents under the Christmas tree was a package of Tim Tams - I like your name for them. I truly understand.

Sandra & Chad - I have a little memento for you. We had a transplant-aversary celebration with the family and friends at a local restaurant in Mildura my home town. Of course you have to have a cake so my wife had one made to suit the ocassion and I would like to share it with you and anyone else who cares to look. It certainly caused a lot of interest on the night and lots of people fetched their cameras to get a shot. Even the restaurant chef was impressed and raced home for his camera. The photo appeared in the local paper with a story about my daughter and me and the transplant procedure it certainly created a lot of interest. Even as recent as a month ago a lady asked me about live donor procedure because her mom has suffered total kidney failure and she hopes to become a donor for her. The picture looks great but the real thing was brilliant and made some people a bit "queasy". Yours etc Lopsided Do the best you can with what you have. |

Now this is the most creative cake I have ever seen. What did she use to shake this cake? Can someone resize this picture please?

I can assure you Heather that it tasted very good, but a lot of people could not look at it for long. It came out into a very busy large restaurant and created a lot of interest. A great meal and a pleasant evening was very much enjoyed by all. |
